Meet Maria

Mustard Seed Communities’ newest apostolate, Hogar Niños de Dios, officially opened its doors last month to dozens of individuals with disabilities who had been abandoned in the Dominican Republic; already, it is a cherished sanctuary that children such as Maria embrace as home.

When Maria was a baby, she was left unattended near a fire. Tragically, her legs were severely injured when the fire spread, and Maria lost her home. Left without any care or support, Maria was vulnerable to a world that nearly abandoned her.

Today, the courageous Maria is ready to transform into the best version of herself at Hogar Niños de Dios, where she has found a place to belong. Surrounded by loving caregivers and enthusiastic peers she already considers friends, six-year-old Maria is loved, receives physical therapy, and attends school.

Maria sends a peace sign to the camera alongside Michelle Shines, Managing Director of International Programs, as they attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for Hogar Niños de Dios.

Maria and children like her receive round-the-clock care, essential therapy, education, and a community who loves them at Hogar Niños de Dios. Finding joy in every moment shared with her new family, Maria can feel safe with the knowledge that her story will not end in despair, but continue on brimming with love and hope for the future.
