Nicaragua
In 1999, Mustard Seed Communities extended its reach to Nicaragua, addressing the needs of abandoned children with mental and physical disabilities. Collaborating with local organizations, MSC identified land in a small neighborhood near Managua, initiating the construction of a residential home. The presence of MSC Nicaragua has since expanded, including a second home in Diriamba for children with disabilities. Additionally, MSC Nicaragua, through the Christ in the Garbage Ministries program, provides support to women and families in impoverished areas of Managua. This initiative involves distributing food packages and maintaining a Resource Center, empowering adult women with vocational skills for economic independence.
Caring Homes for Individuals with Disabilities
Focused on providing care for individuals with a range of disabilities, our two residential programs in Nicaragua cater to diverse challenges—providing loving and lifelong care for the most vulnerable members of society.
Hogar Belen Managua
San Antonio Sur: Hogar Belen Managua, established in 2000, serves as the inaugural location of MSC Nicaragua, providing residential care for 30 children aged six months to sixteen years. Catering to a range of disabilities, including Down syndrome, microcephaly, cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, autism, and infantile cerebral paralysis, the home offers various therapeutic services such as horse therapy, hydrotherapy, and interaction therapy. MSC Nicaragua ensures the children receive tailored support and education based on their individual needs and abilities.
Hogar Belen Diriamba
Diriamba: In 2006, Mustard Seed Communities Nicaragua acquired land in Diriamba to establish a second home, Hogar Belen Diriamba, for children with disabilities. Situated an hour from Managua, the residence offers a flexible approach with cottage-style accommodations for semi-independent living and dorm-style settings for those needing more care. The completion of a Specialized Recreation Center plays a pivotal role in our children’s development, utilizing play therapy to foster strength and competency. Additionally, a chapel with a capacity for 150 people serves as a hub for spiritual growth within the community of Diriamba.
Sustainable Agriculture
As part of MSC’s commitment to achieving self-sustainability, Hogar Belen Diriamba has transformed into an agricultural hub. The initiative includes planting crops and raising broiler chickens, providing meat and produce for in-house consumption, meeting the nutritional needs of residents in Diriamba and Managua. Beyond nutrition, on-site farming empowers residents, involving them in various stages, from land clearing to vegetable planting. Despite challenges posed by Diriamba’s weather, successful cultivation of carrots, beans, sweet potatoes, and squash has been achieved.
Christ in the Garbage Ministries
The Christ in the Garbage Ministries (CIGM) program originated in response to the dire conditions faced by communities relying on the La Chureca landfill near our homes in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. Although La Chureca no longer exists, MSC continues the core of CIGM’s mission by delivering food packages to areas in urgent need.
CIGM Nicaragua also empowers women with marketable skills, aiming to break the cycle of poverty. The program started with a sewing center in 2006, evolving into today’s Resource Center (Centro de Recursos). This comprehensive initiative offers classes in pastry-making, crochet, monthly spiritual reflection, and provides childcare during classes.
Addressing long-standing economic challenges in the region requires sustained efforts. Through CIGM, women gain income-generating skills, fostering hope. Your support allows MSC to uplift the most vulnerable in society. Donate today to make a positive impact on lives.
